A roller for heat treatment of a web of material (4), in which the web (4) is cooled to a defined, predetermined temperature in a gap (5) between the roller (1) and a mating roller (2) is designed as a variable-flexibility roller with a non-rotating support (8) and a rotary roller shell (10) which abuts on the latter with support elements (11). The roller shell consists of several concentric zones, a soft inner zone (16) and a thin outer zone (17) with good thermal conductivity, for example of metal. The roller surface (22) is cooled, for example with cooling gas nozzles (18), which can be controlled with a temperature sensor (20) so that the roller temperature in the gap (5) assumes a defined value of temperature. This roller can be used in a calender for smoothing webs of paper or for processing or manufacturing plastic sheeting. |
