The brake system (which does not require the use of an auxiliary hydraulic pump and, in the preferred embodiment, controls only the rear brakes of a four-wheel vehicle) includes a normally-open isolation valve 22 between the master cylinder 14 and the rear wheel brakes 20, and a normally-closed dump valve 26 between the rear wheel brakes and a fluid accumulator 28. A computer control 30 monitors the rear wheel speed and deceleration and, during braking of the vehicle, controls the application of hydraulic pressure to the rear brakes by controlling the isolation and dump valves 22 and 26 in order to correct wheel speed departures and prevent lock-up of the brakes. The computer control 30 can detect an increase in road surface friction which occurs during a wheel speed departure, and thereafter applies additional pressure to the rear brakes 20 by selectively opening the isolation valve 22. Further, the control 30 detects when one of the rear wheels remains standard operating parameters that control the re-application locked after anti-lock measures have been taken, and the of additional pressure are then modified. <IMAGE>
