A novel silver halide photographic material is disclosed comprising at least one light-sensitive emulsion layer containing a silver halide emulsion on a support is provided. In certain embodiments, the light-sensitive emulsion layer comprises (a) a silver halide emulsion chemically sensitized with a selenium compound and containing silver halide grains having a silver chloride content of 90 mol% or more and (b) at least one of compound represented by formula (I), (II) or (III): <CHEM> The variables in the above formulas are defined in the specification. In other embodiments, the silver halide photographic material comprises a substantially silver iodide-free silver bromochloride emulsion having a silver chloride content of 95 mol% or more and a silver bromide localized phase in the vicinity of the surface of silver halide grains contained in the silver halide emulsion in an amount of more than 10 mol% as calculated in terms of silver bromide content. In other embodiments, the light-sensitive emulsion layer comprises (a) a silver halide emulsion chemically sensitized with a gold compound and containing silver halide grains having a silver chloride content of 90 mol% or more and (b) at least one of compound represented by the foregoing formula (I), (II) or (III). The light-sensitive emulsion layer containing a silver halide emulsion chemically sensitized with a gold compound comprises at least one mercaptoheterocyclic compound. In other embodiments, the silver halide emulsion layer comprises in at least one layer a silver halide emulsion made of silver bromochloride grains having a silver chloride content of 80 mol% or more, the silver bromochloride grains having a localized phase with a silver bromide content of 10% or more. And, in still other embodiments, the light-sensitive emulsion layer comprises (a) a substantially silver iodide-free silver bromochloride emulsion having a localized phase with a silver bromide content of 10% or more in the vicinity of the surface of silver halide grains, the silver chloride content of all said grains being 95 mol% or more and (b) at least one of compounds represented by the foregoing formulae (I), (II) and (III). The silver bromochloride emulsion may comprise an iridium compound.
