The tree protector comprises an elongated tube of transparent or translucent plastic material which is weakened by UV light, and is provided with at least one radial slit or a cut 26, which extends through the double wall 18, 20 of the tube 12 at the free end 14 of the tube 12, which is intended to be stuck into the ground 16. The slit, or slits, 26 extend in lengthwise direction from said free end 14 to a distance approximately corresponding to the intended planting depth of the tree protector. When the growth of the tree 28 planted in the protector begins to be hindered, the protector's buried part expands along the slit, slits, or cuts 26, and the separation of the part lacking slits or cuts is made possible in that the portion of the tree protector 14 above the ground surface is weakened by UV light. <IMAGE>
