The sealed head (1) consists of a tubular rotor (3) connected to the pressure system (2) and of a stationary sealed-head housing (5) arranged on the rotor (3) via rolling contact bearings (4) and having a connection piece (5') for the heat transfer medium, the rotor (3) being in open communication with the connection piece (5') in the interior of the sealed-head housing (5). A primary mechanical seal (6) which seals off the rotor (3) with respect to the wall of the sealed-head housing (5) is arranged axially between the connection piece (5') and the rolling contact bearings (4) and a secondary seal (7) between the rotor (3) and the wall of the sealed-head housing (5) is connected downstream of the mechanical seal, on the atmosphere side. This secondary seal (7) is situated on that side of the rolling contact bearings (4) which lies axially opposite the primary seal (6), with the result that the space (8) containing the rolling contact bearings (4) is included in the space between the primary and the secondary seal (6, 7), which is supplied via feed and discharge connections (9.1, 9.2) on the sealed-head housing (5) with a guard medium which excludes oxygen, is circulated and cooled in a pipe system (20) outside the sealed-head housing (5).
