PURPOSE:To produce a high quality optical fiber preform not containing pores and fine crystal particles therein. CONSTITUTION:In a method for preparing an optical fiber preform by molding silica powder and subsequently subjecting the porous molded product to a chlorine treatment and a transparent glass-forming treatment, the porous molded product after molded is heated in an oxygen-containing atmosphere.
