Servo speed control of the motor of a typewriter print head is effected by monitoring the time interval between regularly spaced slits 19a in an encoding wheel 19 driven by the motor passing a detector. Slits 19b having a different spacing are also present on the wheel 19 to allow the phase of the motor to be monitored. The servo control is disengaged as this phase section passes the detector.
