PURPOSE:To prevent a cell from being damaged by detecting oxidation damage of the cell owing to the deficiency of a fuel gas, etc., quickly and sensitively. CONSTITUTION:In a layer built fuel cell wherein a reaction gas is supplied by common gas headers 5, 6, a gas concentration detecting apparatus 4 to detect carbon monoxide and/or carbon dioxide is installed in the downstream side of the oxidizing agent supplying and discharging system of any single cell either in the most bottom part or in the 1/3 lower part or a plurality of the single cells in the same part. In the case that the gas concentration of an oxidizing agent becomes higher than a prescribed value, the fuel flow rate is increased or the cell is stopped. Based on the fact that oxidation damage of the cell is easy to happen in the lower part, the detection sensitivity is improved by installing the gas concentration detecting apparatus in the lower part in the downstream side of the cell. |
