An efficient purification system for filtering the water which leaves a peat production area 1 comprises a system of inlet and outlet ditches 6, 8, 9 together with possible regulating dams 5, 11 and also settling ponds 17, and a purification field together with encircling collecting ditches 8. Closed ditches 13 have been formed in the vicinity of the surface 7 of the purification field, most advantageous at a depth of 20-40 cm, but substantially above the ground water level 16, all of which closed ditches 13 finish in the collecting ditch 8 or its immediate vicinity, such that the filtration distance at the end of the ditch is shorter than from the surface to the closed ditch. <IMAGE>
