A biological nitrification/denitrification water treatment plant comprises at least one nitrification reactor and one denitrification reactor, at least one of which is a fluidized bed type, a recycling system for each reactor and a system providing communication between the two reactors, each of these systems incorporating a flow monitoring device and the normal means for supplying and discharging effluent and gases, and normal process control means. In each of the reactors mounted in double cascade configuration, the biomass is fixed on a fluidized bed consisting of porous particles with a density of 1700 to 3000 kg/m<3>, a total specific porosity of 300 to 700 mm<3>/g, and an average particle size of 200 to 600 mu m for the nitrification reactor and of 400 to 1000 mu m for the denitrification reactor. The invention also discloses a biological nitrification/denitrification water treatment method.
