Method for locally reinforcing the surface (3) of an engine component (2) based on aluminium, subjected to significant thermomechanical stresses, such as components of an internal combustion engine, characterised in that it comprises the following steps: - depositing a metal coating (1) onto the said component (2) forming the substrate, the metal coating (1) having a given thickness and being composed of chemical elements which are capable of forming, with the aluminium, alloys of high hardness; - irradiating the coating (1) under a vacuum by means of a high-density electron beam operating according to physical characteristics and with a predetermined scanning, so as to melt the coating (1) and the substrate (2) over a desired depth; which enables a surface combination alloy to be produced in situ which, as a function of the respective chemical compositions of the substrate (2) and of the characteristics of the irradiation, likewise has a high hardness, greater than a Vickers hardness number of 350 over a great depth, more than 2 mm. <IMAGE>
