Coolant is pumped (2) from a reservoir (1) through the inner tube (22) of a heat exchanger (3) to a waste heat recovery boiler (4), and forwarded via an oil separator (5) and valve (6) to the turbine inlet (8) of a compressor (7). A condenser (10) replenishes the reservoir (1) to complete the Rankine cycle. Some coolant circulates through an expansion valve (11a) and evaporator (11), abstracting heat from the reservoir (1). The valve (6) is rotated to switch from the heating to the cooling mode. USE - In vehicles and industrial plants utilising waste heat, and in households exploiting solar or other natural energy resources.
