The operating principle of an anti-blocking system controller for a vehicle with selectable two or four wheel drive and differential locks is to drop out of four wheel drive automatically when the brakes are applied. If wheel slip tendency is detected on starting, e.g. on a hill, four wheel drive, and if necessary differential lock is automatically selected. At (to) the vehicle starts and the anti-locking system reference (42) increases and follows a preselected characteristics (42a,b, c). If wheel slip occurs (t1) four wheel drive is selected. If slip persists (t2) differential locking is selected. Wheel speed (40) and vehicle speed (41) follow their courses depending upon driving conditions. Braking (t3) (BLS) disconnects four wheel drive and the reference is changed over to a braking characteristic (42',42"). If wheel slip is detected (AV)(t4) the anti-locking controller caomes into action on the independent wheels.
