The X-ray source (2) is adjustable along the axis of the column (1) in which at least three telescopic sections are coupled together. The movements of the source (2) involve equal relative displacements of the sets of adjacent sections (15,16, etc) using lugs (24-29). The column (1) is fully extended by the interaction of one set of lugs (24b,26b,28b) at the lower ends of the respective tubular sections (15-17) with corresp. lugs (25,27,29) on the outsides of their counterparts (16-18). Another set (24a, 26a,28a) serves for full retraction of the column.
