An ignition system for internal combustion engines is characterized by a high degree of freedom from misfires together with minimal electrode burning. To this end, an ignition device (5) associated with each cyclinder is switched on in synchronization with the theoretical ignition point for the corresponding cylinder and, when switched on, may deliver an ignition current to the park plug for an indefinite period. When the air/fuel mixture in this cylinder is ignited, a sensor (1) detects the burning in the cylinder and immediately switches off the ignition device (5). In any case, the ignition device (5) of every cylinder is switched off after a predetermined maximum time-interval has elapsed, i.e., even if no burning has taken place. In one variant, the ignition device (5) is first switched off in any case independently of the sensor after a time-interval equal to the normal delay between switch-on of the ignition device and burning and then switched on again when and only when no burning is or has been detected by the sensor (1).
