A method for bidirectional communication of digital data via an optical fibre is specified by means of which the data of one transmission direction are transmitted in gaps in the other transmission direction. For this purpose, the bits of continuous data streams are shortened at least by a factor of 4 and the shortened bits of the data stream of one transmission direction are transmitted in the gaps, produced by the shortening, between the bits of the data stream of the other transmission direction in each case. The bits are lengthened again to their original width in time for recovering the continuous data streams in the receiving stations. |
