Disc has a substrate (1), a layer of non-conducting material (2), a recording layer (3) and a protective layer (4). The protective layer comprises at least one metallic element selected from the metallic element or elements which form the recording layer. The protective layer pref. contains a rare earth metal. The protective layer may be a film of metal, metal oxide or metal nitride. The protective layer film materias are Te, Te oxide or Te nitride. The recording layer comprises a film of TbFeCo. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for the recording and retrieval of data. The recording disc has good productivity and environmental resistance.
