Immediately before and after the bar peeling machine are bar feed roll assemblies with roll axes inclined to impart a combined axial and rotational movement to the bar in its passage through the peeling cutter head. The second bar feed may form part of a bar straightening machine. To avoid damaging the surface of the peeled and polished bar, it is fed out of the machine line by a draw carriage which has jaws gripping the bar. Just before the bar is gripped, the inclination of the feed rolls is automatically reduced to zero so that the bar stops rotating and only moves forward axially. The rotational speed of the feed rolls is synchronously regulated to maintain a constant axial bar velocity. ADVANTAGE - Simple draw carriage without means for rotating the bar can be used.
