A data communication system for use on a motor vehicle has at least one master unit and at least one slave unit which are connected to a communication bus. The master unit has a first memory for storing various items of data, a transfer controller for outputting a transfer control signal, and a first transfer unit for transferring data between the first memory and the slave unit based on the transfer control signal. The slave unit has a second memory for storing various items of data, and a second transfer for transferring data between the second memory and the master unit based on the transfer control signal. The transfer controller outputs a transfer control signal, and the first transfer unit transfers data between the first memory and the slave unit to update or refer to the data, based on the transfer control signal. The second transfer unit transfers data between the second memory and the master unit also based on the transfer control signal that has been outputted to the communication bus. <IMAGE>
