PURPOSE:To improve the response time to a writting operation by reporting the end of the writing operation to a host computer before the writing operation of the redundant data is complete. CONSTITUTION:The write command information given from a host computer 1 is held is a command/status memory 14 which is backed up by a power supply in an array controller 13. Then the end of a writing operation is reported to the computer 1 before the writing operaltion of the redundant data is complete as long as the writing operation of the updated data is complete. The redundant data are written in a background. If the redundant data could not be actually written due to the abnormality of the power supply, etc., the new redundant data are generated from the data on other disk devices of a redundant group based on the write command information stored in the memory 14. Then the writing operation of the redandant data is complete.
