In a coupling between a box 11 and a shaft 12, three balls 15 engage cylindrical recesses 17, 18 in the shaft and box respectively. In a drive for a gear pump shaft 7 two such couplings are employed, the box 11 being surrounded by a ring 8 and cover-plate 9 to assist in sealing the shaft 7. The recesses 17 and/or 18 may be at an angle of less than 5 degrees to the shafts to hold the end of the sleeve in light contact with the cover-plate. Preferably the radial width of a ball opening is equal to the radius of a ball plus the radius of a recess; the two recesses may be of equal radius. To prevent loss of the balls when the shaft is withdrawn, a race 16 having a cam surface 19 is provided within the base. To maintain alignment of the shaft 12 on withdrawal, the shaft may be provided with a hub which engages a bushing on axial movement of the shaft.</p> |
