Sialic acid derivatives and process for preparing these compounds. In these compounds, a phenylthio group is stereo-selectively incorporated at the 3-position of the sialic acid. These compounds are useful as intermediates for snthesizing various glycosides such as ganglioside, a blood type determing factor, GQ1b etc. The present invention also relates to sialic acid-containing oligosaccharide derivatives and process for preparing them.
