Archimedes' law concerning the upwards pressure of water can be supplemented by a second law to the effect that the upwards pressure exerted by a fluid can be used as a source of energy by a stepped water mill (Fig 1) and an air pump. Ten cube-shaped buckets (1-10) each of 1-litre capacity are carried around and lower axles. Buckets 1 to 4 contain air; buckets 6-9 contain water; buckets 5 and 20 and in transition. The iron pump consists of two iron pistons, each weighing 6 kg, rigidly joined. The pump is fixed to and rotates around the lower axle, gravity producing a reciprocating motion. One completes rotation of the pump supplies four buckets with air (arrows p).
|
