PURPOSE:To obtain a low-cost magnet allay having superior characteristics by substituting rare earth metals other than Sm for part of Sm in an alloy consisting essentially of Sm and specified transition metals and by specifying the space between phases in the cast structure of the resulting alloy. CONSTITUTION:Starting materials are melted with a high-frequency melting furnace in an inert atmosphere of Ar, etc., and an alloy having a compsn. represented by a general formula (Sm1-xRx)(TM)2 is cast. In the formula, R is rare earth metals other than Sm and including Y, TM is transition metals such as Co, Fe, Cu and Zn, 0.5<=x<=0.9 and 6.5<=z<=8.8. A rare earth metal magnet alloy having high magnetic characteristics and temp. characteristics can be produced at a low cost by substituting inexpensive rare earth metals including Y for 50-90& of Sm in a conventional rare earth metal magnet alloy having a compsn. consisting of Sm and Co and by regulating the space between dendritic phases in the cast structure of the resulting alloy to <=80mum. |
