PURPOSE:To provide the optical control element which can change over the light which is to be controlled and has the same wavelength lambda as the wavelength of the control light having a prescribed wavelength lambda from either of an on state or off state to the other by the control light or can increase or decrease the intensity of this light to be controlled. CONSTITUTION:The optical control element 42 consisting of quartz glass as a base material absorbs the laser beam Ls which is the light to be controlled by the excitation absorption generated in association with the incidence of the laser beam Lc which is the control light. The transmissivity of the laser beam Ls is, therefore, lowered and the output of the laser beam Ls is turned off when the laser beam Lc is made incident on the optical control element 42 while the laser beam Ls is held transmitted. Conversely, the excitation absorption to the laser beam Ls is lost and the laser beam Ls can transmit the optical control element 42 so that the element is put into the on state again when the incidence of the laser beam Lc on the optical control element is stopped. |
