The invention relates to an improvement aimed at facilitating the use of a laterally foldable stair. The device will consist in mounting, for the upper step, a normal step (7) totally independent of the foldable element, which will avoid widening the tread for an articulated step which would otherwise abut against the bottom of the well. Supported by the walls of this well, (7) will be able, for a necessary clearance, either to have width reductions (8) at one end or be mounted pivotably on the side opposite the wall. In the version with steep inclination, with alternating omission of half-steps, (7), reduced to a half width, will be fixed or will pivot on an axial inverted console. Closure will be effected from the floor, by acting on the pedal (19), lifting the central post and folding, by way of the cable (10). This device will avoid an unnecessary elongation of the batter and will facilitate the manoeuvring of the stair at both levels. <IMAGE>
