PURPOSE: To inexpensively obtain a highly durable surface-finishing article by exposing a coarse, nonwoven, three-dimensional web of polyester fibers to ultraviolet radiation to activate its surface followed by coating the surface with a phenol-formaldehyde resin which is then cured to effect high adhesiveness between the surface and the resin. CONSTITUTION: A coarse, bulky nonwoven web of polyester fibers suitable as a highly durable surface-finishing article is obtained by the following process: a coarse, nonwoven, three-dimensional web of polyester fibers blended or not blended with a delustering agent (e.g. titanium dioxide) is treated with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide (when blended with no delustering agent) and then exposed to ultraviolet radiation at a dose of 200 mJ/cm<2> , or irradiated with the above ultraviolet radiation alone (when blended with the delustering agent), to activate the web surface followed by coating the surface with a phenol-formaldehyde resin which is then thermoset to effect high adhesiveness between the resin and the web surface through bonding so as to be in mutual contact between the resin and the fibers. |
