The drive reverses the travel direction of a hydraulic lift having first and second rams acting respectively on the cage and the counterweight, which are coupled together via a guided supporting rope. It has four connecting unions (21-24) for separate pipes (11-14). Two accumulators (35,36) each have a chamber (37,38) accommodating part of the hydraulic fluid. These are connected respectively to the first and second unions (21,22), the pipes (11,12) from which lead to the cage and counterweight rams. Each accumulator chamber can contain a component (50,51) altering its volume. ADVANTAGE - Avoids oil overheating and formation of air cushions in ram cylinders.
