A hybrid plasmid comprises a hybrid trp/lac (tac) promoter and operator region including transcription and translation control signals, proximally downstream of which region is located a unique EcoRI restriction site, downstream of site. The plasmid further comprises a selectable phenotypic marker and a functional replicon for E. coli. The promoter and operator region are capable of expressing DNA under the control of the region and inserted between the EcoRI site and the Bam HI site.
