A TE-CO2 laser gas mixt. consists of CO2 contg. an additive R with a rate constant (KR) for the V-T transfer of the V2 mode of the CO2 molecule which is greater than the corresp. constant for the transfer of the V3 mode and which is so large that, at a much lower partial pressure (PR) than for the CO2 gas, the relationship (KR.PR) = approximately/tm is true (t = discharge pulse duration = pref. max. 100ns). Additive R is pref. H2 at a partial pressure satisfying (KH2.PH2) = approximately/tm CO : H2 partial pressure is at least 4. USE/ADVANTAGE - For special applications in medicine, material processing, laser photochemistry and range measurement (LIDAR). The specific peak power extn. and efficiency of prodn. of gain switch pulses without end ripple from TE-CO2 lasers are increased.
