The use of aromatase inhibitors for contraception in female primates and a method for contraception in female primates using such substances without substantially affecting the menstrual cycle of the female primate. The particularly preferred aromatase inhibitor is 5-(p-cyanophenyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroimidazo [1,5-a] pyridine.
