A piston (7), particularly for compressing air, is driven by an arrangement of crankshafts and gears which cause it to dwell at the bottom of its stroke. The piston is movable by being coupled to an auxiliary crankshaft (5) slid able to-and-fro in dovetail guide plates (6) when rotated by a pinion (1) on the crankpin of a main crankshaft (4). The piston (1) rotates the auxiliary crankshaft (5) by being in permanent mesh with a gear (2) on the auxiliary crankshaft, linking rods (3) being provided to maintain the correct spacing between the axes of the gear and the pinion. <IMAGE>
