The faulty cigarettes are rejected from the magazine region with lower shafts for forming cigarette batches. Above the shafts the cigarettes are held in vertical rows within testing shafts (28), passing through a testing zone in which they are individually checked and the rejects separated. A number of simultaneously checked cigarettes (11), corresp. to the number of cigarettes in each testing shaft, is separated from the following ones. The separation takes place by transverse shift, after which they are released downwards after the faulty cigarettes (18) have been ejected. A checking unit (17) is transversely mounted in the cigarette magazine at a spacing above the magazine shafts.
