PURPOSE: To obtain a sensor of physical parameter like a magnetic field, temperature or pressure by arranging two single mode cores in a matrix of clad glass and providing a sensitive coating on the outer surface of a clad. CONSTITUTION: A laser 4 emits a beam of light transmitted via a fiber optic cable 20. A lens 6 couples the light beam to a core 10. Two single mode cores 10, 12 are arranged in parallel with one another. A second lens 7 couples the light beam coupled from the core 10 to the core 12 to a detector 8. Sensitive coatings 14, 15, 16 expand or contract in the presence of a specific field, and generate an inner strain and hence a pattern of a refractive index change at the inside of the fiber. As the coating, when a magnetostrictive material is used, an interferometric fiber magnetic field sensor can be formed, when a piezoelectric material is used, an electric field sensor can be formed, when plastic is used, a sound wave or pressure sensor can be formed, and when aluminum is used, a temperature sensor can be formed. |
