PURPOSE:To prevent erroneous sentence segmenting by discriminating a period showing an abbreviated shape with that of a sentence end at the time of executing the segmenting processing of one sentence such as an English sentence. CONSTITUTION:An abbreviated notation with the period is stored in a dictionary and a word end retrieves the period in the English sentence being a translation object (step A). The dictionary is retrieved with the word with the detected period (step B). When there is a word concerned in the dictionary, it is judged to be the abbreviated word and not the sentence end ('No' in step C). When there is no word concerned in the dictionary, the period of the sentence end gives judgment ('Yes' in step C). When the sentence is not terminated by using the judgment results ('Yes' in step E), the sentence is segmented (step F), and the English sentence is analyzed (steps A-D). |
