Dual spindle machining head, comprising one spindle with a laser cutting head and a second spindle with other tooling and a common vertical axis drive for both spindles. Pref. both spindles (10,16) are mounted axially sliding in separate housings and connected to a central vertical axis drive, pref. ball screw drive (28). The first spindle is equipped for a laser machining head, fixed by means of a quick-release coupling (36,38,40) with provision for cable and hose connections. The coupling elements (38,40) are permanent magnets and armatures or opposite poled permanent magnets and the head incorporates centring rings (42,44). The position of the lower spindle ends is arranged so that only the laser head is in operating position with both spindles tooled and the other spindle is in operating position with the laser head removed. USE/ADVANTAGE - Laser machining can be combined with other machining operations, e.g. milling, plasma cutting or water jet cutting, with minimum changeover and in one workpiece setting, using the same numerical controls and programs.
