A thermally insulating system for buildings has an at least partly elastic member for thermal protection which forms one or more connected spaces between at least two separate wall components, and these spaces hold gaseous and/or solid material. The vol. of the thermally protective member, and partic. the dimensions of one or more of the wall components, can be altered. The spaces are pref. joined by other spaces in acrylic polymer. ADVANTAGE - The system provides simple and cheap thermal insulation suitable for diverse applications. The insulation is easily installed or removed. In an example, the cross-section of a wall has the member (35) which is at least partially elastic. It has a wall (25) inside an e.g. clinker wall (23) with air gAP (24) behind, and an outer thermally protecting layer (35). This layer (35) is an inflatable air cushion (4) or cushion mats which consists of connected flexible and moveable spaces; these spaces can be inflated between two supporting sides. The mats (4) can be at least partially transparent twin-walled sheets with internal spaces e.g. for use as windows. The flexible spaces can be in e.g. three-ply film welded along the edges.
