Antistatic properties are imparted to a magnetic recording medium by including in the magnetic layer a polymer whose electrically conductivity derives from its pi-conjugated structure. In a claimed embodiment the conductive polymer is present as a coating on the magnetic powder, this coating pref. being obtd. by polymerisation of the corresp. monomer together with a solvent and a catalyst in presence of the magnetic powder. The polymer is pref. polypyrrole poly-Me-pyrrole, poly-Me-thiophene, polyazulene, poly-p-phenylene or polyaniline. ADVANTAGE - High density, high output recording media with good antistatic properties can be obtd. without the need to use C black.
