New optically active cpds. have formula (I) where R1 and R2 are each 1-12C alkyl or perfluoroalkyl, in which one or 2 CH2 or CF2 gps. can be replaced by -O- -CO-, -CO-O-, -CH=CH-, -CH(halogen)-, -CH(CN)-, -O-CO-CH(halogen) and/or -O-CO-CH(CN)-; one of R1 and R2 can also = H, F, Cl, Br or CN; R1 can also be gp. (i); A1, A2, A3 and A4 are each 1,4-phenylene (opt. with 1 or 2 F, Cl, CH3 and/or CN substits.), in which one or 2 CH gps. can be replaced by N, 1,4-cyclohexylene, in which 1 or 2 non-adjacent CH2 gps. can be replaced by O or S, piperidin-1,4-diyl, 1,4-bicyclo(2,2,2)octylene, naphthalen-2,6-diyl, decahydronaphthalen-2,6-di) or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-2,6 -diyl; Z1 and Z2 are each -CO-O-, -O-CO-, -CH2CH2-, -OCH2-, -CH2O-, -CC- or a single bond; X = halogen, CN or CH3; RO = a 1-10C alkyl gp. different from X (and also from R2 if n = o = O); m and n = 0, 1, 2 or 3; o = 0 or 1; (m+n+o) = 1, 2, 3 or 4; and Q1 and Q2 are each 1-4C alkylene, in which a CH2 gp. can be replaced by -O-, -S-, -CO-, -O-CO-, -CO-O-, -S-CO-, -CO-S-, -CH=CH-COO-, -CH=CH-, -CH(halogen)- and/or -CH(CH)-, or a single bond.
