An electromagnetic casting apparatus and process is disclosed in which a flow control system (37, 35, 30) is provided to control the flow of molten material to the casting zone. The flow of molten material is controlled in response to sensed variations in the hydrostatic pressure in the head of molten material in the casting zone with the object of keeping those variations to a minimum. Optimum conditions are therefore maintained for the operation of the conventional control system (18) which controls the power source (17) for the inductor (11).
