<p>The invention relates to a wave inverter, that is to say a device producing a transverse magnetic field alternately North-South and South-North polarised along the course of an electron beam and allowing, in a Free-Electron Laser, direct conversion of a portion of the energy of a beam of relativistic electrons into light energy. It relates to a wave inverter comprising a conductor (60) forming, along the path of the electron beam, windings or meanders inducing all or part of the transverse magnetic field. It consists, in order to increase the luminous efficiency, in providing on the said conductor (60) auxiliary current tapping outlets (P1,...Pj,...Pn) enabling the transverse magnetic field to be modulated as a function of the changing characteristics of the high-frequency electric field which increases during the arrival of an electron packet in the optical cavity of the Laser by virtue of the energy given up by them.
