PURPOSE: To optimize data transfer methods from serial to parallel and from parallel to serial and a diagnosis of data transfer operation. CONSTITUTION: The contents of a tape are written in a memory (202). A tape drive error is recognized (204) and an in-drive tape absence signal is confirmed (206). When there is no tape, insertion is requested (208) or a hardware error signal is sent out (210). When there is no the tape drive error (240), the tape is read (212) and when a tape error is recognized (214), a hardware error message is displayed (216), or a defective block table is analyzed (218) so as to determine a block to be used for a test. When defective blocks are present by >=5% (220), a hardware error code is generated. When the number of the defective blocks is smaller than a defective block table, tape protection is determined (224) and a read test (226) or write test is started. |
