An electrical connector assembly is provided for achieving positive latching in a fully mated condition. The assembly includes a first connector (10) and a second connector (12). The first connector (10) has at least one latch arm (50) resiliently deflectable about two angularly aligned axes (x & y) of deflection. The second connector (12) includes a cam (62) disposed for engagement with the latch arm (50) during mating of the connectors and for deflecting the latch arm about a first (x) of the two axes of deflection into a latching condition in response to full mating of the connectors. The second connector (12) includes a housing (30) for enclosing the latch arm (50) inside the housing when the connectors are fully mated. Access is provided to the latch arm (50) of the first connector (10) from outside the housing (30) of the second connector (12) whereby the latch arm (50) can be deflected about a second (y) of the two axes of deflection to enable disengagement of the latch arm (50) from the cam (62) for facilitating unmating of the connector. <IMAGE>
