A holding device or screw chuck for use with a lathe is disclosed. The device is adapted to be used with a conventional screw having a shaft portion and a head portion and a conventional screw bit having a head that is compatible with the head of the screw. The holding device has an elongate housing adapted to be mounted in the lathe. The housing has a mounting end portion, a distal end portion and a longitudinal axis. A cap is detachably coupled to the distal end portion of the housing. The cap has a cap aperture formed therein dimensioned so that the shaft portion of the screw fits therethrough and so that the head portion bears against the cap adjacent to the aperture. The distal end portion of the housing has a non-circular aperture formed therein. This aperture is dimensioned so that a rear end portion of the bit fits therein and so that the bit cannot rotate. An adjusting screw is positioned in the housing and is adapted to bring the bit into engagement with the screw and to prevent axial movement of the bit.
