A pulse code modulation process converts an analog video signal into a digital signal to be passed through a recording or transmission channel. The digital signal includes a digital words of a given number of bits, and each digital word represents an amplitude level of the video signal. The digital words are allocated to a given set of graduated amplitude levels such that the sum <IMAGE> has a minimum value whereby i=the ordinal or place number of a bit within a digital word m=the number of bits of a digital word, k=the ordinal number of an amplitude level in the given set, A(i, k)=an amplitude error measured by the number of jumped-over amplitude levels caused by an erroneous reproduction or transmission of a single bit i in a digital word k.
