PURPOSE:To inexpensively assemble an optical switch having many input/output ports. CONSTITUTION:Three control parts 26, 28, and 30 are provided which are movably interposed in slits 22 formed in intersections of a waveguide 16 having a lattice pattern which should be connected to input optical fibers 12A to 12C and output optical fibers 14A to 14F. These control parts 26, 28, and 30 are made of mercury, a refractive index matching material, and air respectively. Normally, the control part 28 made of the refractive index matching material is placed on the optical path of the intersection of the waveguide 16; and at the time of switching of an optical switch, mercury is heated to place the control part 26 made of mercury in the optical path of the intersection. |
