The invention relates to a device making it possible to know, without contact, the spatial position of a laser beam focused with a high power density (order of magnitude: 6.103 W/mm<2> to 6.105 W/mm<2>). It consists of a miniature laser (1) and a receiver (2) which cannot move with respect to each other. A laser beam (5) with high focused power, which transversely cuts the measuring beam (4), deflects the latter by varying the (refractive) index of the gaseous medium which surrounds it. This deflection leads to knowledge of the spatial position of the beam.
