Selected cylinder pressure measurer for IC engine - uses glass fibre between cylinder head and engine block to detect pressure fluctuations via micro-curvature losses

The pressure measuring arrangement for petrol and diesel engines uses a glass fibre (2) inserted in the sealing gap between the cylinder head and engine block. The pressure fluctuations caused by combustion are converted directly via microcurvature losses in the fibre into a measurable modulation of the transmission damping. The time of max. combustion pressure of each cylinder is determined by electronic evaluation. USE/ADVANTAGE - Reducing exhaust gas emissions. Benefits from accuracy and EM immunity of optical methods and operates reliably over large temp. range.
