A pressure redn. chamber (2) tapers outwards from the end of the combustion chamber (1) between grids (10,11) associated with respective pairs of lasers (5,6;8,9) and opened and closed alternately. The downstream grid (11) has three times the cross sectoinal area of the upstream grid (10) with mesh sizes of 0.08 and 0.139 mm respectively. A third grid and pair of lasers may be added further downstream to recover and return leakage of energy from the second grid (11). ADVANTAGE - Excessive noise associated with electric field expulsion from grid is suppressed by time delayed differential pressure thrust control.
