Surge protector for HV electrical distribution system

In an electrical voltage surge protector a primary electrode (3) and a secondary electrode (5) are bolted together (7) and enclose an arc chamber contg. high pressure gas (33). An insulating gasket (13) is fitted between the electrod faces. At opposite ends of the gas chamber contacts (47, 49) are held onto the electrode ends by bronze springs (45). Bronze material composition is CuSn 6 F 95. During an electrical surge the contacts vaorise as an arc forms in the chamber to form a metal vapour cloud. Contact material is typically CUN1 2 Fi 49. The insulating gasket burns aay as contactmaterial is consumed. Electrodes are encapsulated in either ceramic or resin typematerial to provide external insulation.
